Second Grade Resources

The below passage is similar to a passage the students will see, or have seen in school. The students can practice their comprehension by reading Where Does Food Go? Students have been taught to reread the text and search for the answer to the posed question.

Extension to Higher Order Thinking:

In order to push students to the next level, we must change the way we question. The question sheet attached asks black and white questions. As the parent, consider asking the following questions.

How do you know?

What did the text say to tell you that?

Where did you find your answer in the text?

Does this remind you of a familiar time in your life?

Math:

Problem:

Lee has $5.35. He bought a piece of gum that cost $0.76 and a bouncy ball that cost $1.26. How much money does Lee have left?

Ask the students what they know just by reading the math problem.

I know: Lee has $5.35. He spent $0.76 and $1.26.

I need to know: How much money Lee has left.

I solve by: Subtracting

1.      $5.35-$0.76= $4.59

2.      $4.59-$1.26= $3.33

3.      Lee has $3.33 left.
